Project Share: How Professional Organizing Simplified a 6-Month Mountain Home Renovation in Western North Carolina
The Main Question Homeowners Ask
How do you stay organized during a major home renovation when you’re still living in the house?
Renovations are exciting—but they also create months of disruption. Closets and bathrooms become construction zones, belongings need protection, and daily routines suddenly disappear. Recently, our team at Green Mountain Space partnered with Semper Fi Custom Remodeling and Carolina Closets to support a homeowner through a six-month renovation that completely swapped their primary bathroom and closet layout. Our role was to handle decluttering, packing, temporary living setup, unpacking, and final organization so the client could focus on the renovation—not the chaos. In the end, our team saved the client 150 hours of preparation and post-renovation work while creating functional systems for their newly renovated spaces.
TL;DR
A 4,453 sq. ft. mountain home underwent a major bathroom and closet renovation.
The homeowners lived in the home during the entire 6-month project.
Our team packed fragile items, edited wardrobes, and created a temporary downstairs living space.
After renovations, we unpacked and organized the new bathroom and closet systems.
Total time saved for the client: 150 hours of decluttering, packing, and organizing work.
The project resulted in less stress, easier routines, and a smoother transition during construction.
About the Home and the Renovation
This project took place in a mountain home near Black Mountain, North Carolina, just outside Asheville.
Home details
Home size: 4,453 square feet
Time living in home before renovation: 6 years
Renovation length: 6 months
The homeowners loved their house, but the layout of the primary suite wasn’t working well for their daily routines.
Two key issues drove the renovation:
Limited storage
A layout that didn’t make the best use of space
Working with Semper Fi Custom Remodeling, the homeowners decided to completely swap the bathroom and closet areas to create a better flow. Custom closet design was handled by Carolina Closets. Before construction could begin, however, the home needed to be fully prepared and packed for renovation work while still allowing the homeowners to live comfortably in the space.
Why Renovations Can Feel Overwhelming
Many homeowners underestimate the amount of preparation required before a renovation begins.
Typical tasks include:
Decluttering closets and storage areas
Packing belongings
Protecting fragile items
Relocating furniture
Creating temporary living spaces
Maintaining access to everyday essentials
At the same time, homeowners are also making renovation decisions like selecting finishes, working with contractors, and managing construction timelines.
Without help, these tasks can quickly become overwhelming.
That’s where professional organizers step in to simplify the process and reduce stress.
Green Mountain Space helped prepare this Black Mountain, NC mountain home for a six-month bathroom and closet renovation by decluttering, packing, and organizing belongings.
Pre-renovation walk through before packing with professional organizing team
Step 1: Decluttering Before the Renovation
Before packing anything, our team began with a wardrobe and household edit.
This step helps ensure clients only move forward with the items they truly want in their newly renovated space.
We reviewed:
Clothing and accessories
Bathroom items
Storage areas within the renovation zones
Decluttering before renovations prevents homeowners from packing and unpacking items they no longer want, which saves both time and effort later.
It also allows new storage systems to function more effectively once the renovation is complete.
Step 2: Packing and Protecting Belongings
Once the editing process was finished, we began preparing the home for construction.
Working alongside Semper Fi Custom Remodeling, we identified the areas that would be impacted during renovation.
Our team carefully packed and protected:
Artwork
China collections
Fragile décor
Closet contents
Bathroom supplies
Everything was clearly labeled and organized to make unpacking easier after the renovation was finished.
This preparation allowed the remodeling team to begin construction without worrying about damaging personal belongings.

Step 3: Creating a Temporary Living Space
One of the most important parts of this project was designing a temporary living setup downstairs.
Because the primary bedroom areas were under construction, the homeowners needed a fully functional space to live comfortably during the six-month renovation.
Our team set up:
Temporary clothing racks
A dressing area
Bedside tables
Organized bathroom storage
A medicine cabinet for vitamins and supplements
Temporary linen storage
A converted art space functioning as a temporary office
We also ensured the homeowners had full access to their daily essentials, including:
Clothing
Toiletries
Jewelry
Vitamins and supplements
Linens
Within just two days, the homeowners were fully set up and ready to live comfortably while construction began.

Step 4: Coordinating With the Design and Remodeling Teams
Professional organizing during renovations works best when it’s collaborative.
We coordinated with:
Semper Fi Custom Remodeling
Carolina Closets
During the project we:
Attended a pre-renovation walkthrough
Identified areas requiring packing and protection
Reviewed closet design plans
Space planned for organization products
Having access to the closet designs in advance allowed us to pre-purchase organizing products and prepare systems that would work perfectly with the finished space.

Step 5: Moving Back Upstairs After the Renovation
After six months of construction, the new bathroom and closet were finally ready. Our team returned to help the homeowners transition back upstairs.
We completed:
Unpacking belongings
Installing organizing systems
Setting up drawers and storage areas
Arranging clothing and accessories
What could have taken the homeowners weeks of unpacking was completed by our team in just a few days.

Organization Systems Installed
To maximize functionality, we installed a variety of storage solutions.
Closet Systems
Storage baskets for accessories and seasonal items
Handbag dividers
Drawer dividers for smaller clothing categories
Velvet hangers for uniformity and space efficiency
Bathroom Organization
Acrylic drawer organizers
Bins for categorized toiletries and personal care items
Jewelry Storage
One standout feature was a wall-mounted jewelry organizer that allowed the homeowner to easily view and access her collection.
Dresser Organization
Drawer dividers for clothing categories
These systems help maintain order long after the organizing team leaves.
The Results: 150 Hours Saved
Renovations require an enormous amount of behind-the-scenes preparation.
By handling the packing, temporary setup, and final organization, our team saved the client approximately 110 hours of work.
Those hours included:
Decluttering
Packing and labeling
Setting up temporary living spaces
Unpacking and organizing the finished areas
Instead of spending weeks managing these tasks themselves, the homeowners were able to focus on the renovation process while we handled the logistics.
What the Client Said
The homeowner shared this review after working with our team:
“Jess Reed and her team at Green Mountain Space did a great job helping us prepare for our recent home renovation. We needed help cleaning out our closet and two bathrooms and moving us to a downstairs area. They brought in everything we needed, helped us purge unwanted items and got us set up and organized in our temporary living space in two days. Our belongings were organized and labeled and stored. It made a disruptive situation less stressful. The team was respectful, friendly, fast and efficient. I definitely recommend GMS and look forward to using them again after our renovation is finished.”

The Final Reveal
The most memorable moment of the project came when the homeowners saw their newly renovated bathroom and closet layout. Swapping the two spaces dramatically improved the functionality of the primary suite.
The finished result created:
Better storage capacity
A more functional bathroom layout
Easier mornings
Greater wardrobe visibility
And with the final layer of organization installed, the space felt completely finished. It was truly the “chef’s kiss” moment of the renovation.
Why Organizing Should Be Part of Every Renovation

But the greatest benefits happen before and during construction.
Professional organizing during renovations helps:
Reduce stress
Protect valuable belongings
Maintain functional living spaces
Ensure new storage systems work effectively
Instead of juggling dozens of decisions and physical tasks, homeowners can focus on the exciting parts of improving their home.
